About Erma Microtome

Erma Microtome is a versatile sectioningdevice suitable for medical institutions, research & pathologicallaboratories. This microtome has special application for cutting thin sectionsof histo-pathological specimens and also caters to the demands of industries suchas plastic, leathers, textiles, rubber & fertilizer. It is ideal for thosewho want to avail advantages of a Erma Microtome at a moderate cost. The entiremechanism stands on a heavy cast iron base ensuring stability and rigidity. Itscompound slide ways of critical tolerances guide the specimen block. The metalhinged cover housing protects the internal mechanism against dust and paraffinwaste, It can be conveniently opened for resetting, cleaning and lubricating. The Microtome is driven by a handle which can also be locked. Cutting sectionsare obtained in different thickness by mechanically operated crank through aknurled knob in front of the instrument.

The knurled knob is graduated in micronsfor feed setting and ready reference. A detent click action ensures positiveadjustments in one micron increment. The knife holder unit is equipped with arotating knife clamp to adjust desired angles for best sectioning. It hasforward and backward movements to ensure contact of specimen with the knife andlateral movement to get maximum use of knife edge. Smooth & accuratespecimen movement is achieved with the time proven operating principles of thefeed mechanism. Travel is entirely independent to the vertical movement of thespecimen block. When the feed limit reaches to an end point, it disengagesitself. To bring the feed screw back, the vice is pressed slightly, and themain gear wheel is turned clockwise till the screw reaches its startingposition. All parts are fabricated from selected alloys and the microtome knifeis manufactured from fine grain steel tested to maintain optimum sharpnessstrength.

FAQs of Erma Microtome:

Q: How does the Erma Microtome ensure high precision in tissue sectioning?

A: The Erma Microtome enables precise adjustment of section thickness from 1 to 25 microns, using a rotary wheel mechanism for fine control. Its robust construction and blade alignment features contribute to highly accurate and repeatable results.

Q: What types of specimens can be used with the Erma Microtome, and what is the maximum size it can accommodate?

A: The microtome is compatible with a variety of biological tissue samples, thanks to its universal specimen clamp. It can hold specimens up to approximately 60 x 30 mm, making it suitable for routine and research applications in histology and pathology.

Q: When should section retraction be used during microtomy?

A: Section retraction is utilized after each cut to prevent contact between the specimen and the blade, reducing the risk of tissue damage or uneven sectioning. This feature enhances section quality, especially when working with delicate samples.

Q: Where is the Erma Microtome commonly used?

A: It is widely used in laboratories, hospitals, research institutes, and educational settings across India and internationally, particularly in fields like histology, pathology, and medical research where microscopic tissue analysis is essential.

Q: What is the process for safely operating the Erma Microtome?

A: Operation involves placing the specimen in the universal clamp, adjusting orientation, and setting the desired section thickness. The specimen is then sectioned using the rotary wheel, with knife protection shields and locking mechanisms in place to ensure user safety.

Q: What maintenance is required for the Erma Microtome?

A: Routine maintenance is minimal due to the anti-rust coating and easy-to-clean surfaces. Regular cleaning with the included brush and inspecting moving parts for wear are generally sufficient to keep the unit performing optimally.

Q: What are the main benefits of using the Erma Microtome in laboratory practice?

A: Key advantages include high precision in thin tissue cutting, robust safety features, versatile specimen compatibility, low maintenance needs, durable construction, and smooth, manual operation without the need for external power sources.
